St. Finbarr's won the coveted Award of Science Excellence in the “Discover Primary Science” programme in June 2008. Pupils from all classes participated in this programme throughout the year.

Exciting Science experiments were carried out in each classroom, using the essential skills of Observation, Investigation, Estimation, Analysis, Prediction etc.
- Activities included:
- A visit to the Lifetime Lab;
- A presentation on Energy Awareness by local Green Party Representative Quentin Gargan;
- Competitions including Greenwave and K’nex etc.
- A display demonstration by the pupils of their experiments.
