McCormick's Variety Show

ib_p034_0_14We were lucky to have the wonderful McCormick’s Variety Show visit our school on Tuesday 22 April. A very lively and fast-paced performance took place for the boys of St. Finbarr’s.

They were introduced to many different instruments such as the slide trombone, the trumpet, drums, accordion and the didjeridu, along with being given a chance to play them. Comedy, competitions and contortionist acts took place in between the musical entertainment.

The talented group also amazed us with their rope spinning and juggling. It was fantastic for the boys to see a live performance and appreciate what a skilled group the McCormick’s are. One look around the gym at the reactions on their faces made it clear that this particular variety show would be very welcome to return to St. Finbarr’s in the future.

school_bandOur St. Patrick’s Day Parade was a great success and our band performed very well on the day. A group of tin whistle players performed “Match of the Day” to tie in with our sports theme. The Percussion group wowed us with their drums and shakers, while the rest of the boys regaled us with a rap.

Well done to those boys who took part. Their enthusiasm and dedication to practice was excellent!

p020_1_00Baroque ‘N’ Roll

On Friday, 18 of January, the sound of Baroque music filled the school, as the pupils from 2 to 6 classes sat attentively in the Halla enjoying the Music Workshop. Throughout the hour that ensued, Nick, Joe and Kate played many beautiful pieces, some of which were over 400 years old. After each performance they then explained to the children how this music would have been composed.

We learned how a line of music would be played over and over again by the bass instruments. It would then build up to include the melody which is where the recorder would come in. Nick demonstrated how his viola da gamba works and amazed us with the low notes it could produce. Joe told us of the similarities and differences between his harpsichord and a piano while Kate showed us her stunning array of hand-carved recorders. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience in which we all learned a thing or two about Baroque Music.
